The Circular Beds bed bases are made from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic consisting of tarpaulins, milk crates, bread crates, garden pots, storage containers, buckets and more. We purchase all our recycled plastic material from Australian suppliers who recycle plastic products here in Australia. Check out GT Recycling who supply us with their 100% recycled plastic pellets.
Typically, bed bases are made from low grade virgin timber, stapled together, and furnished with fixed fabric coverings (with more staples). The combination of materials is notoriously difficult and costly to recycle. In Australia, most bed bases are sent to landfill.
Our manufacturing facility is located on the outskirts of Melbourne, Victoria. We use 100% Australian sourced recycled plastic to make products for the Australian consumer. We don’t import virgin materials or recycled plastic from other countries.
Unlike other bed bases where the fabric is stapled in place, The Circular Beds bed base fabric cover is removable, can be washed, reconditioned, reused and, at end-of-life, can be recycled.
The Circular Beds bed base offering champions circular economy principles by reimagining bed base design. This closed-loop system facilitates the reintegration of materials back into production (via end-of-life recycling and then reuse within the same or similar product), adhering to circular economy principles.
Given the combination of different materials that are used to make a traditional bed base (low grade virgin timber, metal / staples, and fixed fabric coverings) the cost to recycle is prohibitive – resulting in most bed bases going to landfill. Even if bed bases are recycled, the current cost of collection and processing is up to $90 per item (per “Soft Landing” pricing).
By using recycled plastic to produce our bed bases, no virgin materials are used in its production, meaning plastics are being diverted from landfill. The recycled plastic is Australian sourced – compared to other bed base materials which are typically sourced internationally and are single use materials.
The Circular Beds bed base is designed for durability, resists mould, odour and pests, and is easy to clean and sterilise for re-use, significantly extending its lifespan which counters the disposability culture (and can reduce costs).
Finally at life's end, our bed bases are easily and fully recyclable, continuing its material utility and upholding circular economy values. Our bed bases significantly reduce the volume of bedding waste generated and therefore waste management costs.
The Circular Bed Base is setting a new sustainability standard, transforming industry norms by prioritising bed base retention and re-use, and supporting Australia’s commitment to a waste-free future.
